Tuesday was our oldest son’s fourth birthday. After a weekend of celebration, we spent his actual birthday with the BellaMadris clan in a little orchard in Sebastopol. It was lovely. And beautiful. This orchard, down a long quiet gravel road, is in a No Spray Zone and the owner isn’t a big fruit harvesting guy, so Julie has been given permission to pick all she wants. And this was part of the result of our harvest.
The boys ran wild, fueled by chocolate cupcakes and the prospects of sitting on this shiny red tractor.
A great day was had by all. Thanks Julie for bringing us there!
It made us both think, if we could actually live way out in the country. We (Julie and I) both like the convenience of living in town, not using our cars, but we also have a draw towards living out in a quiet open place in the country too. Melinda chose to give up country life for the city recently. Where do you live? Do you wish you lived closer to a town, or farther from it?
I just discovered your blog and I’m really enjoying it! I’m going to have to find some of those purple haze carrots to try next year.
Unfortunately I live in the suburbs so I don’t really enjoy the benefits of the city or the country. But I have to admit that in Rhode Island you are never more then 20 minutes away from the city or the country so I guess I can’t complain.

I have been living this dilema for a bit! On one hand I am so content out here in the “country” (but the country for us entails close proximity to a main highway, about 1.4 miles in fact hehe) and we are far enough out to get chickens, eggs, some produce, and numerous farmers markets, all without much though really. Which makes us fortunate, right?
Then my friends that live in the “city” and do not use their cars as much get me thinking.
Then I start thinking of a lot of options (and noise abatements) that we appreciate here in the country. I know you were asking more of appreciation of one vs the other, but man doesn’t that question alone bleed into an array of other importanit ones. Dang it.

Erin, I’m glad I’m not the only one who struggles with this dilemna too. I guess we have it pretty good where we are. We are on a third of acre without many neighbors so it feels somewhat country (we can have chickens and have hawks flying around) yet we are in town limits and can walk downtown easily. But sometimes being far out in the country on acres seems very appealing!
Well, I live in a suburb of the 3.6 million person tri-county seat of Seattle, WA. I garden as a hobby and to feed my family something better than we can get from the store or restaurant. That said, part of me wishes I could get away from it all. My brother wants 5-10 acres in nowhwere land where he can practice sustainable living. I’m not sure I’m that far off.
I love your choice of party locations! Beats the heck out of the Children’s Museum where my 4 year old had his party. Bravo!
